| Easy Snowflake |
The holidays are coming up, and that means that we have all that decorating to do! So, as my holiday gift to you, please accept this simple crochet pattern. It takes approximately five minutes to make, so you can have a small flurry in an afternoon or two!
This is also a great project to introduce children to basic crochet. It's short enough they can finish at least one before they get bored, but with enough stitch variety that they can learn to do basic projects on their own.
Each snowflake is approximately 2.5 inches across, including picots.
Basic Definitions
- st - stitch
- sl st- slip stitch
- ch - chain
- sc - single crochet
- dc - double crochet
- sk - skip. This means skip the indicated number of stitches from the last stitch that connected to the previous row. So, if the number is 2, count 2 stitches and put your next stitch in the third one.
- join - to connect the current stitch to the first stitch of the current row, almost always a sl st.
Notation Only For This Pattern
- Picot - ch4, sl st in 3rd chain from hook, ch 1
- Hanging picot - ch 10, sl st in 9th loop from hook, ch 1
Tools
- sport weight yarn - your color of choice
- size G hook, or size to get gauge
- scissors
- yarn needle
Work
start: ch 6, join
Row 1: ch 1, 12 sc in ring, join to first sc with a sl st.
Row 2: ch 3, dc in same stitch as join, *picot, sk 1 sc, 2 dc in sc* ( do between asterisks around until you have five total loops), hanging picot. Join to top of 3 chain with sl st.
Tie off, weave in any ends.
Starch, if desired or needed.
Notes
If you need a longer hanging point, you can add chains to your hanging picot. Then count back x - 1 to see where you sl st. For example:
- ch 20, sl st in 19th chain from hook, ch 1
- ch 15, sl st in 14th chain from hook, ch 1
Alternately, you can do a normal picot, finish off, and thread fishing line through a stitch of your choice to hang it.
